Academic Workshops | A Small, Cross-Disciplinary Bie-modern Seminar
Recently, Professor Sun Guodong, Vice Dean of IAS-Fudan, published “Bie-modern and Zheng-modern: A Study on the Historical, Practical, and Theoretical Logics of Chinese Modernity”. This paper was the first to introduce the concept of Bie-modern into the field of political jurisprudence. The article places Bie-modernism in the context of the development of Bie-modernity in China, highlighting the “practical penetration” and “ideological creativity” of the theory of Bie-modernism. At the same time, the author also puts forward the concept of “positive Bie-modernism” as opposed to “Bie-modernism”, and explains his understanding of Bie-modernism between Bie-modernism and positive Bie-modernism, which is very thought-provoking. In order to further discuss the theoretical issues involved in the paper and to provide a broader perspective for the exploration of Bie-modernism theory, Professor Wang Jianjiang, the author of Bie-modernism theory, decided to carry out an inter-professional seminar to communicate with students from different professional backgrounds, to express their views, and to inject new vitality into the theory of Bie-modernism. Huang Yanyao, a master’s student of the Law Department, Wang Juan, a doctoral student of Literature and Art, and Wang Meng, a master’s student of Literature and Art, who had a bachelor’s degree in Law, participated in this meeting.

This was followed by insights from each of the students. Huang Yanyao, a master’s student, was the first to speak. He talked about how he met Bie-modernism theory and his interest in Bie-modernism theory. Then he explained his understanding of Bie-modern and Bie-modernism by combining his professional background in law with his real-life experience. Wang Meng, a master’s student, started from Prof. Sun Guodong’s thesis, which centered on the conceptual issues of “Bie-modern” and “Bie-modern”, and organized the different meanings of the above concepts in the theoretical context, in an attempt to clarify the essence of the theoretical exploration of modernity. At the same time, he also stated his own opinion on inter-disciplinary theoretical research. Wang Juan, a doctoral student, discussed the practical value of the theory of Bie-modernism from the perspective of reality, and also commented and supplemented the views of the first two students.

At the end of the meeting, Prof. Wang Jianjiang made a concluding speech. He highly praised this cross-disciplinary seminar and hoped that more cross-disciplinary and cross-boundary seminars could be carried out in the future. He also welcomed more students and teachers who are interested in Bie-modernism theory to join in the discussion of Bie-modernism theory! (Written by Wang Juan)
