Guizhou Social Sciences has specially launched the special topic “Bie-Modernism and Art” in the 8th issue of 2021
Moderator’s remarks:
Several papers selected here are all about the theory of Bie-modernism and Chinese art, especially contemporary Chinese literature and art.
American independent scholar, Ph.D. David Brubeck’s “The Pause of Other Modernism: Dust, Ink and Wash, the Age of Enlightenment and Leapfrogging Existence” expounds the Gerat-Leap-Forward Pause Theory of Bie-modernism from a unique perspective as the “New Enlightenment” ,and link this theory with Taoist philosophy and Zen philosophy in ancient China, Trying to explain that contemporary Chinese Bie-modern art creations adhering to the pre-modern Chinese traditional ideology and cultural spirit. He has the spirit of experiencing nature from its own perception and being one with nature. But unlike Bie-modernism’s reflection and criticism of Bie-modern society’s mixed state of pre-modern, modern and post-modern, David believes that this three-dimensional mixed form is more conducive to the development of Chinese contemporary art. In addition, although he does not oppose that the development of society has or needs a great-leap-forward pause, he believes that the modern society is a pause that has been spatialized in time. In a sense, I disagree with his view, but I also understand the dissent of a Western scholar on the creation of contemporary Chinese philosophy, because this dissent is determined by his cultural background and knowledge structure Understand. This is the result of his “forward-looking”.If this article has any impetus for the construction and development of Bie-modern theory, I think it is he who proposed the concept of Bie-culture. There are also scholars in China who have put forward Bie-culture before him, but there is no written or systematic discussion. And this article by David is already studying “Bie-culture”.
Guan Yu’s “Behind the Titles of Contemporary Chinese Art” starts from the “Four Heavenly Kings” and “Five Tiger Generals”, which are famous at home and abroad, and the art with the characteristics of “mask” and the recent cases of Bie-modernism art creation. She revealed the differences between Bie-modernism art and various contemporary Chinese art titles, and also described their common features, which is the reflection and critique of mixed-form art. This kind of reflection and criticism constitutes the true nature of contemporary avant-garde art. It is a deconstruction of titles such as “Cynical Realism” and “Postmodernism”, and it is also a negation of the negation of Chinese contemporary art.Perhaps this is a paper that will arouse discussion and controversy in domestic art theorists and critics, and has its potential academic value.
Sun Ruixue’s “Laughter and Coldness After Reaction – Aesthetic Analysis of Cold Humor in Bie-Modernism” discusses cold humor, a relatively fashionable contemporary aesthetic form. She links cold humor with other modern social forms, reveals the social reasons for the formation of cold humor, and has certain theoretical insights. The article believes that, unlike traditional humor, cold humor does not directly throw out the point of laughter, but requires the receiver to comprehend the point of laughter after reactin. And to feel the chilling and cold reality caused by the object at the time of comprehending the point of laughter and afterwards, and thus play a unique role of sympathy, reflection and criticism that is different from ordinary humor. The “after reaction” here is a punchline that captures the essence of cold humor.
The above three papers have obvious problem consciousness and construction consciousness. They are all based on Chinese literature and art practice and aesthetic practice. They go deep into specific writers and works, and conduct research and comment on specific propositions and concepts, so they are more down-to-earth and demonstrate the spirit of Bie-modernism to avoid falsehood and preserve truth. Their field of discourse covers artistic creation, art theory, aesthetics and even philosophy, giving people inspiration from multiple angles.
